Program Book

Magnificent Region VII held its 2004 Conference & Career Fair in Houston March 11-14 hosted by the Houston Association of Black Journalists. George Curry, 2003 NABJ Journalist of the Year and Herbert Lowe, NABJ President were the keynote speakers.

More than 235 people attended the conference at the Westin Oaks Hotel adjacent to Houston's famed Galleria Mall. Conference workshops featured local, regional and national professionals focusing on "Embracing Diversity, Preparing Journalists for the Future." Students produced a newspaper, a live radio newscast, a TV newscast and press releases through mentored practicum experiences. Attendees were treated to a boat cruise in the Houston Port area, a Bid Whist and Spades tournament and a 2005 New Orleans preview party.

Students and professionals received Ma'at Awards for journalistic excellence in the coverage of the Black community. The inaugural Cheryl Smith Award for Future Leaders was given to four individuals from different professional chapters who exemplify the characteristics of passion for journalism, commitment to community, mentoring students and professional development. The conference concluded with a inspiring Gospel Brunch.
