NABJ Elects New President at Annual Convention in Dallas

DALLAS (Aug. 9, 2003) — Herbert Lowe, 40, was elected president of the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) at the 28th Annual Convention and Career Fair in Dallas. The 3,000-member organization of African American journalists is the largest in the world. Lowe will serve as the national chair for two years.

A staff writer at Newsday in Queens, N.Y., Lowe has worked as a reporter and editor at The Philadelphia Inquirer, The Virginian-Pilot, The Record (N.J.), The Press of Atlantic City, The Milwaukee Community Journal and Amateur Sports magazine. Lowe said, “NABJ will regain its leadership role among journalism groups as we fight for more black journalists in all media, at all levels and in all markets. Our advocacy on issues concerning diversity will be inspired and aggressive.”

Born in Camden, N.J., Lowe is the eldest of six children raised by a single mother. He graduated in 1984 with a double major (broadcast journalism and political science) from Marquette University. He is also a member of Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity. Lowe is the 15th president of the organization.

  • Treasurer: John Yearwood, national and international editor, Fort Worth (Texas) Star-Telegram
  • Secretary: Sarah Glover, general assignment photographer, The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Parliamentarian: Melanie Burney, education reporter, The Philadelphia Inquirer
  • Region 2 Director: Rachelle Dickerson Christie, copy editor, The Star Ledger, N.J.
    New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania
  • Region 3 Director: J. Elliott Lewis, freelance television reporter, Washington, D.C. Delaware, Maryland, Virginia and Washington, DC
  • Region 4 Director: Ernie Suggs, reporter, The Atlanta Journal & Constitution Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina
  • Region 5 Director: Marsha Eaglin, regional producer, CBS News, Chicago Illinois, Michigan, and Wisconsin
  • Region 6 Director: Stephanie Jones, assistant features editor, The Commercial Appeal, Memphis, Tenn. Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Tennessee, and West Virginia
  • Region 7 Director: Russell LaCour, copy editor/pagination, Tulsa (Okla.) World Arizona, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Texas
  • Region 10 Director: Jerry McCormick, features copy editor, San Diego Union-Tribune Alaska, California, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington
  • The newly elected president will appoint the Region 1 director. Regions 8 and 9 were write-in candidates. The winners of those regions were not available at press time.
  • Associate Representative: Angela McClendon, communications specialist, San Antonio Convention & Visitors Bureau
  • Student Representative: Caleb Wilkerson, graduate student, Louisiana State University

NABJ seeks to improve the coverage of Black communities by increasing the number of Blacks in newsroom management and by monitoring the treatment of Black journalists.
