NABJ Media Institute Presents Better
Watchdog Workshop
Dec. 13-14, 2003 -- College Park, Md.
Sponsor: NABJ Media Institute
Host: Philip Merrill College of Journalism
This session is made possible through
the general support of the Philip Merrill College of Journalism,
University of
Maryland.
A Better Watchdog Workshop is intended to help those journalists
at small- to medium-sized news organizations -- and those in
bureaus of larger organizations -- to learn the investigative
skills that keep government and business accountable and to
produce enterprising and informative stories.
Critical among the skills is the ability to use federal and state FOI laws
to open the doors to public information.
IRE and SPJ, with funding from the SDX Foundation, have joined
forces to offer these fast-paced workshops throughout the United
States and show how improved reporting skills, often aided
by the employment of open-records laws, can result in top-notch
journalism. A small team of expert instructors run the workshops,
bringing together IRE's expertise at journalism training and
SPJ's leadership on FOI issues. Program materials include a
copy of
SPJ's "Open Doors," a recently published guide for
using FOI laws and some of the best IRE tipsheets on beat coverage. The
registration fee includes
a 6-month membership in IRE and SPJ.
Speakers will include Stephen C. Miller, The New York Times;
Ron Nixon, Star-Tribune; and Brant Houston, IRE and NICAR.
Computer-Assisted Reporting Training Introductory: Attend
this hands-on workshop and learn how to use Excel, a powerful
electronic spreadsheet, for deadline reporting. Also learn
how to
dig deeper using the Internet.
Intermediate: If you can comfortably move around, write a
formulas and import information into a spreadsheet, this is
the session for you. This hands-on workshop will help reporters
use Microsoft Access to delve into databases for more in-depth
stories. The session will cover: querying a database, summing
and sorting information and importing info into a database.
