How do I get started with my new website?
Visit the new account orientation page for information regarding directory structure, how to get to your site, and what you will find when you get there.

How do I provide access to the site for my Content Providers?
This and other questions regarding administering your site are addressed on the Administrator's FAQ page.

I know that WebDAV is being used to provide access, but exactly what is WebDAV?
WebDAV is a computer-to-computer communications protocol that allows for editing of remote files locally. What does that mean to the average user? Read about WebDAV, and Web Hosting's implementation here.

What can I get for a domain name?
The University of Maryland has the domain name, www.umd.edu. Any unit on campus can request a domain name that is www.xxxx.umd.edu (as long as it isn't already taken). We will coordinate the assignment of your URL with the Network Operations Center on campus. If you want a .org or .net, you will need to purchase the rights to that name from a domain name registration company like Register.com.

What do I do when I try to register a .org or .net?
You need to provide the following information to register your domain to our IP: Domain servers in listed order:

What is Secure Socket Layer?
The Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protocol provides an additional level of security by encrypting your data as it is sent over the Internet. If you are on a page and you have a "closed lock" icon in the bottom left hand corner or your browser window, you are using SSL. You may also notice that the URL in the address window at the top begins with "https:" instead of "http:". If you are going to be sending or requesting personal data over the web, or accepting credit card information, then you should have SSL available. If you want to restrict access to a webpage, you can do that either in unix with the .htaccess or using webspinner. You have used and seen the University of Maryland certificate if you have been to ARES.

What do you mean by a database capability?
Web Hosting has the capability of allowing websites to query and create entries into a database for real-time management of data. We use the Cold Fusion application server to provide the interface between the web and an Oracle database server. For an example of a Cold Fusion Database, see our "Find a Person" on the OIT website. Use the name "jones" or first name "robert" to see how it will search the database.

How do I add the Google search to my site?
Search UM is powered by the Google Search Appliance. Only web sites ending with .umd.edu are indexed by this appliance.

If your web site ends with .umd.edu, go to the Add A Search page for information on adding search capabilities to your site. This site is password protected. Your University of Maryland Directory ID and password are required to enter the site in order to honor the licensing agreement between the University of Maryland and Google.

If your site does not end with .umd.edu, you can still add the Google search functionality to your pages. Click here for information on how to add the Google search to those sites not ending in .umd.edu

What are the versions of Perl and PHP that are available for use on Webhosting?

  • Perl version 5.8.7
  • PHP Version 4.4.9 or 5.2.8 (configured on a site-wide basis)
