NABJ Convention Site Selection

Update on the Process

Dear Chapter Leaders:

Among the most important duties your NABJ Board of Directors performs is selecting which cities will host our annual convention. Each term, the Board is expected to ensure that cities are chosen at least five years in advance – and in the best interest of the association.

Cities selected so far are:

2004 – Washington (Unity ’04)

2005 – Atlanta (30th Anniversary)

2006 – Indianapolis

2007 – Las Vegas

Unity: Journalists of Color will likely hold its next joint convention in 2008, at a place TBD.

The NABJ Board is now engaging in a process to choose cities for our conventions in 2009 and 2010. As always, Executive Director Tangie Newborn, our paid consultants and the NABJ Council of Presidents are ably assisting the Board. Here’s a look at that process so far:

  • Oct.  2003: At its fall meeting in Washington, the board discussed the criteria, process, background and next steps involved in convention site selection. The criteria were later sent out via the Council.
  • Jan. 17: At its winter meeting in Miami, an initial list of 27 cities – compiled from nominations by Board members, chapter presidents and the national staff – was submitted to the Board for preliminary screening.
  • Jan. 17: Jan. 17: At the same meeting, the Board narrowed the list to Charlotte, Chicago, Miami, New Orleans, New York, San Antonio, San Diego, St. Louis and Tampa/St. Petersburg. The Board then directed the staff to conduct further research, initial site visits and preliminary negotiations with representatives from these cities as well as their respective convention and visitors bureaus (CVBs) and hotels.
  • April or Aug. 2004: At either the spring or summer meeting, whenever the information is ready, the staff will report back to the Board with its findings.
  • April or Aug. 2004: Again, when ready, the board will then whittle that list of nine cities down to a few finalists.
  • Aug. or Oct. 2004: At the subsequent meeting, the Board will accept formal proposals and presentations, if necessary, from the cities, CVBs, local chapters, hotels, etc.
  • Aug. or Oct. 2004: The Board will discuss its options, seek additional information, if necessary, and then formally vote to select two cities and an alternate.

As always, the Board and staff will continue to keep you posted as the process continues. We continue to thank you for letting us engage in this process in a professional manner. Pleased be assured that your elected and paid representatives will keep NABJ’s best interests paramount.

Sincerely,
Herbert Lowe
NABJ President
